1909-1911 T206 White Borders Collection (227 including 36 HOF)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $5,875.00

Collection of 227 assorted 1909-1911 T206 White Borders (mostly different but includes some duplicates) highlighted by thirty-six Hall of Famers. 10% are Vg, 50% range from Gd to Gd-Vg, 40% are technically in slightly lesser grades but are still great looking cards (includes several which appear Vg but have a slight trim). How we came upon this lot is a fascinating and amusing story all by itself: A longtime collector consigned his mid-grade T206 set to this auction. The set was housed in plastic sheets. When he handed us the set he mentioned that he thought he had a few duplicates, because when he collected decades ago he liked to save extra cards with different backs if he happened to get them. We saw just a few duplicates hidden behind cards. They were not immediately apparent but the mention that a few extra cards might be tucked behind the singles made us look closely. He didn't think there were many. When it came time to write up the set, and we started removing the duplicates, an almost never ending procession of duplicates with different advertising backs were found. We were supposed to find just a few duplicate cards and, depending on exactly how many we found, then decide if they would qualify as a lot or be returned. After one hundred hidden duplicates were found we thought it was getting crazy. After all the duplicates were removed and counted, we had a total of 227 extra cards including thirty-six Hall of Famers representing almost half an extra set! Highlights: Beckley (Gd, Sovereign back), Bender/no trees (Gd, Polar Bear back), two Bender/trees (both Gd, one Sovereign back), Bender/port. (Gd-Vg), Bresnahan/port. (Gd), Bresnahan/bat (Vg, Polar Bear back), Brown/Chicago (Gd), Chance/batting (Fr-Gd), Chance/red (possible slight trim, Gd appearance), Chance/yellow (Pr), Chesbro (Fr), Clarke/bat (Gd-Vg), Collins/Minn. (Pr-Fr, Polar Bear back), Crawford/bat (Fr-Gd), Evers/Cubs (Pr-Fr), Gandil ("Black Sox", Vg), Huggins/portrait (Pr-Fr, Cycle back), two Jennings/one hand (Fr and Pr-Fr, one Polar Bear back), Jennings/both hands (Pr-Fr), Johnson/pitching (Fr, Polar Bear back), Joss/pitching (Vg), Keeler/bat (Gd), Lajoie/port. (slightly trimmed, otherwise Ex), Lajoie/bat (slightly trimmed, otherwise Gd-Vg, Polar Bear back), Marquard/arms at side (autographed on front in blue ink, otherwise with Vg-Ex appearance), Marquard/pitching (Gd-Vg, Old Mill back), McGinnity (Fr-Gd), McGraw/glove (Vg), Tinker/bat off (possible slight trim, otherwise Vg, Sovereign back), Tinker/port. (Pr), Waddell/port. (slightly trimmed, otherwise Ex), two Waddell/throwing (Gd and Fr-Gd), Willis/Pitts. (Vg-Ex), Willis/throwing (slightly trimmed, otherwise Vg, Sovereign back), and Young/glove (Gd). This lot is ideal for the collector who wants original, authentic circa 1910 tobacco cards which capture the spirit of the history of the game and collecting, but does not want to spend a fortune. This is a very substantial collection of low- to-mid-grade, but still very attractive, T206 White Borders including many highlights. Nine different tobacco advertising brands are represented in this set (including American Beauty, Cycle, Sovereign, El Principe De Gales, Tolstoi, Polar Bear, and Old Mill). LOA from James Spence/JSA (for the Marquard signature). Total 227 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $5,875.00
