1909 Christy Mathewson Tobacco-Card Collection (T206 Sovereign back and T213-3 Coupon)

Starting Bid - $800.00 , Sold For - $3,231.25

Two extremely attractive high-grade tobacco cards featuring Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson, each graded and encapsulated EX-MT 6 by PSA. Though issued years apart, because these two cards share the same design, they are especially fascinating paired together. 1) 1909-1911 T206 White Border of Christy Mathewson (dark cap), one of three poses of Mathewson featured in the popular T206 series. This is a sharp-looking card: extremely clean both front and back, with deep, rich colors, virtually flawless registration, and four square corners displaying just a hint of wear. Centered very slightly to the top left. This is a beautiful card! Scarce Sovereign Cigarettes advertising on reverse. 2) 1919 T213 Coupon Cigarettes (Type 3) of Christy Mathewson (pitching pose, wearing a dark cap), one of the key cards to this elusive and extremely rare tobacco set. One of only two examples graded at this level with just four cards graded higher. T213 (Type 3) Coupon Cigarettes are one of the most unusual and overlooked of all tobacco-card issues. Issued in 1919, it was the very last of the traditional tobacco-card sets. Very similar in design and borrowing images from the T206 set, T213-3 Coupon cards were issued exclusively in the Louisiana area. The offered T213 (Type 3) of Christy Mathewson is a gorgeous example. It is bright and clean, with vibrant colors, and perfect centering. The corners are square with even, very light wear. The back is also virtually flawless with very bold print. Two very sharp-looking, high-quality cards of Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson, issued a decade apart and each sharing the same design, from two of the premier tobacco-card sets of the early twentieth century. Total 2 cards. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $3,231.25
