Collection of twenty-three N172 Old Judges; sixteen (of the 23 cards) have been graded and encapsulated by SGC: Two VG 40: McTamany (Bklyn) and Weber (1889 copyright, Sioux City). Nine FAIR 20: Boyle (Indianapolis), Foster – sliding pose (1888 copyright, NY), Gerhardt, Lynch, Farrar (Philadelphia), O’Brien (1889 copyright, Cleveland), Orr (Bklyn, 1888 copyright), Striker (1889 copyright, Cleveland), and Sutcliffe (1889 copyright, Cleveland). Five POOR 10: Brown (NY), George (NY), Hatfield (1888 copyright, NY), O’Brien (Bklyn), and Richardson (1888 copyright, NY). Many collectors assume that Old Judges are only possible to collect with a huge budget, but occasionally small groups of very respectable mid-grade examples are available. This is a very attractive small group of mid- to low-grade cards from the most important set of the nineteenth century, including a particularly strong 1888-dated example of Des Moines catcher Bill Traffley. Total 23 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000.
