1909-1911 T206 Rare Backs Collection Including Uzit and Lenox (20)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $9,987.50
This is a very unique collection of twenty T206 tobacco cards, each with a different advertisement on the back (one duplicate back), including the extremely rare “Uzit,” “Hindu,” and “Lenox” advertising backs. The consignor of this lot decided to try to assemble as many T206 cards as possible with different backs. Over a period of years he was quite successful, and this collection is the result. He was very discriminating in terms of condition and only added examples with tremendous eye-appeal. The fronts of the cards in this collection are also of very special note, as included are several Hall of Famers (Griffith, McGraw, Willis), the scarce Smith Chi & Bost, Kleinow Bost, future "Black Sox" star Chic Gandil, Chase, and a Southern Leaguer. Clearly, this is not a random group! Each of the cards has been graded by either PSA or SGC (except two GAI). The collection consists of the following in the order of scarcity (with the order of rarity provided by the “T206 Museum” website): 1) Uzit – Chase/holding trophy (SGC FAIR 20); 2) Hindu (Red) – McGraw/glove at hip (HOF, SGC FAIR 20); 3) Lenox (Black) – Howell/hand at waist (PSA VG 3); 4) Broad Leaf 350 – Lennox (SGC VG 40); 5) Carolina Brights – McCormick (SGC VG/EX 50); 6) Hindu (Brown) – Pattee (SGC FAIR 20); 7) American Beauty 460 – Hummel (PSA VG-EX 4); 8) Tolstoi (Factory 30, Dist. 2, NY) – Needham (PSA GOOD 2); 9) El Principe De Gales (Factory 17, Dist. 2, VA) - Lattimore (PSA EX-MT 6); 10) American Beauty 350 (Frame) – Purtell (PSA VG-EX 4); 11) Cycle 350 – Burchell (SGC EX 60); 12) Old Mill (Southern League) – Carey (PSA VG-EX 4); 13) Old Mill (Black) – Smith/Chicago & Boston (PSA GOOD 2 [MK]); 14) Sovereign 350 – Griffith/portrait (HOF, SGC VG/EX 50); 15) Polar Bear (Factory 6) – Bradley (PSA VG 3); 16) Sweet Caporal 150 (Factory 25, Dist. 2, VA) – Flick (HOF, GAI VG-EX 4); 17-18) two Piedmont 350-460 (Factory 25) – Gandil (GAI VG-EX 4) and Kleinow/Boston (PSA GOOD 2); 19) Sweet Caporal 350 (Factory 30, Dist. 2, NY) – Willis/throwing (HOF, SGC VG/EX 50), 20) Piedmont 350 (Factory 25, Dist. 2, VA). This collection represents a great opportunity for a dedicated collector to continue the challenging task of assembling as many T206 cards as possible with different backs. Counting all possible back variations (brand names, printing colors, and factory numbers), there are a total of forty different T206 backs. Incredibly, we have never heard of the assembly of a complete set. Total 20 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $9,987.50
