1889 N172 Old Judge Pete Wood SGC-Graded Collection (4)
Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,292.50
Collection of four variations (three different poses) of Pete Wood from the N172 Old Judge set. This is a fascinating group. Old Judges are the single most important and highly collected of all nineteenth-century cards. One of the primary characteristics of the Old Judge set is that most players are featured in different poses and with text variations. This high-quality collection of four cards is representative and captures the spirit of the entire set, illustrating different poses and styles of the same player. Each card is an extremely striking and high-quality example on its own, but together they compliment one another, and tell the story of the Old Judge set. All four cards have been graded and encapsulated by SGC: 1) “Bat on shoulder, Wood, P., Philadelphia” (1889 copyright in background lower left, EX+ 70, bright and crisp, with very bold contrast, just a beautiful card in all respects). 2) “Arm forward, ball in hand” (very unusual horizontal style, 1889 copyright lower left, EX 60). 3) “Bat on shoulder, Pete Wood, P., Philadelphias” (1889 card, no copyright, VG/EX 50, image is a little light). 4) “Arm back, ball in hand” (1889 copyright lower left, VG 40). Pete Wood played just two seasons in the major leagues and only 33 total games. Though Wood had a very modest career, Goodwin & Co. felt he was a good enough player to include in their set. This, of course, is another primary characteristic of the set which this collection illustrates. All four cards in this lot are the rarer 1889 copyright cards. This happens to be the case because Wood was only with Philadelphia in 1889. The gentleman who assembled this group is a longtime collector whose first two Old Judges, purchased years ago, just happened to be of Wood. He then took it as a personal challenge for many years following to look for additional high-quality examples to add to the group, which of course was all the more difficult as all Pete Wood cards are from 1889. This collection of four cards is the result of his considerable efforts. This magnificent and beautifully assembled collection of four Old Judges (each an exceptionally attractive, high-quality example) is perfect for display; together, these cards represent the spirit of the nineteenth-century's most important set. Total 4 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,292.50
