1909 T204 Ramly Tobacco Walter Johnson
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $9,987.50
Graded VG 40 by SGC. The Walter Johnson card from the T204 Ramly set, one of the most popular of all 1910-era tobacco issues. This is one of tobacco-card collecting's great classics. One of Walter Johnson's rarest cards, it is also universally recognized as the key card from the Ramly Tobacco set. This recently discovered T204 Ramly Walter Johnson example is the highlight of an original-owner collection of forty-six Ramlys that have never before been seen in the organized collecting world, and which are presented in several lots in this auction. Good luck was with the Florida family who saved these cards for decades, and they were excited that they happened to have one of the key baseball tobacco cards of the entire era in their relatively small tobacco-card collection. The card displays light rounding to the corners, and a hint of minor wear to a few spots on the edges. Overall, the easily chipped gold borders are cleaner and far more problem-free than usually found on cards from this extremely condition-sensitive issue. The 30/70 left to right centering and minor crease in the lower left corner, and a couple of very small areas of toning on the otherwise extremely clean back, keep this beauty from a higher grade, but it is easy to see that the card displays better than suggested by the technically accurate SGC grade of Very Good. This is an exceptionally attractive and conservatively graded example of the key card from one of tobacco-card collecting's most highly respected and beautifully designed sets. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $9,987.50
