1909 E92 Croft's Swiss Milk Cocoa Card Collection (7)
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $2,115.00
Collection of seven cards (six different and one duplicate) from the 1909 E92 Croft's Cocoa set, highlighted by four Hall of Famers: Chief Bender, Sam Crawford (2), and Hughie Jennings. Each of these cards has advertising for "Croft's Swiss Milk Cocoa" of Philadelphia on the reverse, along with an illustration of the Croft's Swiss Milk Cocoa package design. The same player designs were also issued with advertising on the reverse for Croft's & Allen Candy, Nadja Caramels, and John H. Dockman & Sons "Base Ball Gum." All are catalogued together as "E92." It appears that both varieties of Croft's cards were issued by the Croft & Allen Co. of Philadelphia, and were probably handed out as advertising items to promote its candy and cocoa, which, as noted on the back of this card, is "Served Hot at our fountain 11 South 15th St. Montague & Co. Philadelphia, Pa." The fact that the advertisement refers to a specific Philadelphia location suggests a very regional distribution, and this no doubt accounts for their rarity. Each card is graded and encapsulated by PSA, SGC, or GAI: Chief Bender/striped hat (HOF - GAI "Authentic" - miscut 100/0 L/R, very clean and sharp, mislabeled by GAI as Dots Miller), two Sam Crawford (HOF - GAI VG+ 3.5 and SGC FAIR 20), Hartsel (PSA VG 3), Hughie Jennings (HOF - PSA EX 5, very big top border, with a hint of ink transfer of ad back from sheet stacking, nice card), Lobert (SGC EX 60, no creases, a little corner wear), and Schmidt (SGC VG 40). This is a very attractive group of these unusual and seldom-seen cards. Total 7 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,115.00
