1909 E102 Anonymous "Set of 25" Christy Mathewson SGC EX/NM 80

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $8,225.00

Graded EX/NM 80 by SGC. This exceptionally crisp and rare E102 "Set of 25" candy card features the legendary Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson in a horizontal throwing pose. This is a stunning example of one of Mathewson's most classic cards. While Christy Mathewson was included in many candy card issues from the 1910 era, this horizontal throwing pose of Mathewson is considered by many to be the most attractive of all Mathewson caramel card designs. It's easy to see why. It's just a beautiful card. The manufacturer of E102 is unknown. The fronts are identical in design to the E101 "Set of 50" related issues. This is an extraordinary example of this striking card in all respects. It is bright and crisp, with bold colors, and four square corners, with only the slightest hint of wear visible under magnification. Perfectly clean both front and back. Centered slightly to the top border with a subtle "diamond" cut (hard to notice unless the card is held vertically with the SGC label at the top, and not necessarily a negative at all on this card, as it is one of the many factors that tell us this is an original cut). Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. This is a outstanding example of one of caramel-card collecting's true gems and one of Christy Mathewson's most classic cards. Strong Ex-Mt condition bordering on Nr/Mt. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $8,225.00
