1910 E93 Standard Caramel Christy Mathewson

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $3,525.00

Graded EX 5 by PSA. One of only six examples graded at this level. Extremely high-grade example of Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson in a pitching pose from the highly desirable E93 Standard Caramel series. For a caramel card, PSA EX 5 is all the more impressive a grade. This is one of Mathewson’s scarcest, most striking, and all-around most highly regarded cards. The image on this card is the same as that used to produce two of the three pose variations (dark cap and white cap) of Mathewson in the T206 White Border series. Bright and clean, with perfect registration, four square corners, and vibrant colors. The back is also bright and clean, with very bold text. The slightly-to-the-right centering is very likely responsible for keeping this card from receiving an even higher grade. We think there is a possibility that this beautiful card is sheet-cut. Caramel cards in general are much rarer than tobacco cards of the era. Because they were issued with caramels one card per package and sold to children (as opposed to being sold to adults with tobacco), they also tend to survive in a much lower grade. This is an exceptional example of a key Hall of Famer from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $3,525.00
