1909-1911 E90-1 American Caramel Joe Jackson
Starting Bid - $4,000.00 , Sold For - $16,450.00
Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. The extremely rare and desirable E90-1 American Caramel card of the legendary Joe Jackson is one of only a handful of cards of Joe Jackson issued during his playing days, and is indisputably recognized as Joe Jackson's rookie card. This card is also one of the rarest in the entire E90-1 American Caramel card set. In recent years the E90-1 American Caramel Joe Jackson has become universally recognized as one of card collecting's most valuable and famous vintage-card rarities. Jackson was always a very rare card in the E90-1 set, but in recent years it has become all the more apparent that this card is truly the key to the set. A few sets of E90-1 have been offered in recent years, but more often than not, they are really sets minus one card: Jackson. This card dates from extremely early in Joe Jackson’s career, when he was a member of Connie Mack’s Philadelphia A’s. Jackson played only ten games with the Athletics before Mack traded him to Cleveland.
Over the years, because of their slightly oversized bottom border design compared to tobacco cards, many E90-1 American Caramel cards have been trimmed. This example of Jackson is unmistakably not trimmed, and even has matching ever-so-slightly askew top and bottom borders. Rounded corners and a horizontal crease just above his knees allow a grade of only Good, but this is still an extraordinarily attractive example of this extremely rare and important card. In fact, of extra special note with reference to this particular example is the near-perfect printing registration of the card. So many times the E90-1 Jackson rookie is printed slightly out of register. It just comes with the territory with this card. Often, Jackson's lips, which are printed in red, are not even properly placed, and appear noticeably too high or low. This is a printing flaw that usually just has to be tolerated by collectors, and is often even not even considered as most collectors do not realize that the registration quality can vary so wildly from card to card. This Jackson rookie example does not have this common problem. The registration on this card is about as good as it gets. That's part of the reason why this card looks so great, and will make make even the most advanced collector who is extremely familiar with E90-1 Jacksons take special note, and react positively to this card, maybe without even knowing why. It's a tremendous mid-grade example with incredible registration. It is also just an all around very clean and attractive card. (And remember: very few E90-1 Jacksons exist in high grade. Good condition for an E90-1 Jackson is statistically much more significant than Good condition for most tobacco cards.) This is a tremendous mid-grade example of one of card collecting's most legendary cards. Reserve $4,000. Estimate $8,000/$12,000. SOLD FOR $16,450.00
