1910 S74 Baseball Tobacco Silks Collection Including Ty Cobb (63)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $10,575.00
Stunning ultra high-grade, pristine collection of sixty-three 1910 S74 Tobacco Silks (47 different players plus 16 color variations), including Ty Cobb. This incredible newly discovered group (it has never before been seen in the collecting world) was saved by chance by a noncollecting family. The collection is comprised of fifty-seven of the slightly larger "colored" S74 silks, including fifteen HOFers, plus six of the smaller “white” S74 silks, including two commons with the original brown advertising paper backing and one HOFer. (Note: The slightly larger "colored" silks were not issued with advertising backs.) The majority of silks have little to absolutely no fraying to the edges, all featuring the factory number along the top and the cigarette manufacturer (Turkey Red) along the bottom. 70% range from Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, 30% very slightly lesser (all appearing Ex-Mt or better, but downgraded due to wrinkles, which can be ironed out to make flat). The nuances of grading and encapsulating silks is in part why SGC and PSA do not yet encapsulate these 1910-era tobacco classics. The only example from the collection we have separated from this group is a second Ty Cobb, from the smaller "white" silks series, in virtually Mint condition with its original advertising back paper intact. It is offered as a separate lot, but this larger collection is loaded with highlights, and would be an ideal foundation for the assembly of an amazing high-grade set. When the grading companies get around to grading S74s, collectors will look back on a fresh group like this and wish they had a time machine. Highlights: two Chief Bender (Nr/Mt and Ex), Roger Bresnahan (Ex), Mordecai Brown (Nr/Mt), two Frank Chance (both Ex-Mt), Ty Cobb (Ex), two Eddie Collins (both Ex), Hugh Duffy (Ex), Johnny Evers (Ex), Clark Griffith (white, Ex), three Rube Marquard (Ex-Mt, Ex, Vg-Ex), and Zach Wheat (Ex-Mt). By any measure, S74s represent one of the very best values of all 1910-era baseball tobacco issues. This is a particularly attractive high-grade collection of these colorful tobacco premiums, including many key stars, and highlighted by a very sharp example of key silk Ty Cobb. Total 63 silks. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $10,575.00
