Rare 1911 E94 George Close Candy "Pennant Winners" Overprint
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $2,350.00
Graded VG 40 by SGC. Presented is a "Pennant Winners" E94 George Close Candy overprint. "Overprinting" is a term commonly used to refer to the rare practice of a company taking cards already printed (in some cases even issued by another manufacturer) and adding advertising, in the form of printing or ink stamp, to allow the cards to function as its own advertising vehicle at modest cost. In this case, the overprint on this E94 Kleinow advertises "Close's Candies - Are - Pennant Winners - Made By - The George Close Co. - Confectioners - Cambridge, Mass." All E94 overprints are extremely rare. The overprint on this card is an extraordinarily bold, flawless, and vibrant blue, and is a perfect strike that really stands out, which of course is ideal for an E94 overprint example. E94s have always been identified as being issued by the George Close Candy Company. E94s without advertising overprints, which is almost all of them, do not identify the George Close Candy Company as the issuer in the text on the reverse. Only the extremely rare advertising overprints, such as this example, provide the George Close Candy attribution. The card has a striking blue background, a very slight diamond cut, and only a touch of minor wear to the corners. This is a very sharp looking card. It is very conservatively graded by SGC and at a glance appears Ex. We grade this card Vg-Ex. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,350.00
