Circa 1910 M101-2 The Sporting News and M116 Sporting Life Collection (80)
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $4,406.25
This collection of early baseball premiums and cards consists of fifty-nine M101-2 Sporting News supplements, and twenty-one M116 Sporting Life cards highlighted by Honus Wagner and Christy Mathewson. With few exceptions, nearly all of the items offered here are mounted within the pages of a 1906 college yearbook. The book (in its present form) was originally obtained decades ago by our consignor's brother, an antiques dealer, who then gave it to our consignor in 1938. Since that time, sixteen of the twenty-one M116 cards and seven of the M101-2 supplements (all of which are included here) have been removed from the yearbook. 1) The sixteen removed M116 Sporting Life cards are the following: Honus Wagner (pastel), Brown (pastel), Clarke (blue back), Mathewson (pastel), Chance (pastel), Baker (blue back), Jennings (pastel), McGraw, Barry, Coombs, Magee, Criger, Leach (pastel), Konetchy, Rucker (blue back), and Kling. The five additional still-mounted cards are those of Johnson (trimmed), Mack, Chase (pastel), Street (trimmed), and McAleer. All of the loose cards display either surface paper loss or paper residue on the reverse from having long ago been removed from the yearbook. A few of the cards also display ink notations on the reverse. The McGraw, Barry, and Konetchy cards each have serious paper loss in one corner and are in poor condition. Technically, all of the cards range in grade from Poor to Good; however, most of the condition problems are on the reverse, and the front of the cards mostly range from Vg-Ex to Excellent appearance. 2) The fifty-nine M101-2 Sporting News supplements offered here (the unbound supplements are noted in parenthesis) are the following: Bresnahan, Young/Criger, Mathewson, Cobb, Lajoie, Chance, Walsh, Wagner, Jennings, Ban Johnson, Comiskey, Collins, Speaker, Brown, Evers, Joss, Crawford, Cobb/Wagner, Mack, Plank, Johnson/Street, Baker, Tinker, McGraw, Magee, Rucker, McAleer, Bell, Chase, Leach, Bush, Krause, Adams, Overall, Merkle, Mullin, Konetchy, Gibson/Raymond, Evans/O'Loughlin/Klem/Johnston, Kling, Dooin, McLean, Coombs (unbound), Taylor, Ford, Lord, Chicago N.L. team (unbound), Hofman, Davis, Archer, Thomas, Milan, Meyer, Bescher (unbound), Barry (unbound), Schulte (unbound), White, Doyle (unbound), and Snodgrass (unbound). These supplements, which were distributed in issues of The Sporting News between the years 1909 and 1913, are considered among the finest large-format baseball issues of the early twentieth century. Exactly one hundred different supplements were issued during that span. Included here are forty-eight of the first fifty-six supplements distributed during the first two years (1909-1910). Most of the supplements measure approximately 7.25 x 9.75 inches, and many have been very slightly and neatly trimmed to fit on the pages of the book. While technically in low grade, most are still very impressive visually, with an appearance ranging in grade from Fair to Very Good, averaging Good. Also included in the book are a small number of both mounted and loose vintage newspaper/magazine photos and articles relating to baseball. The leather-bound yearbook (8.5 x 10 inches), titled The Calyx - WLU, 1906 , is in Good to Very Good condition overall. A fascinating and naturally very difficult to value collection "direct from the good old days," including 21 M116 cards and 59 M101-2 supplements. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,406.25
