1888 N173 Goodwin Cabinet Proof - Deacon White
Starting Bid - $400.00 , Sold For - $2,937.50
1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet proof of Deacon White, third baseman of the Detroit Wolverines. Produced by Fearnaught Photographic Studios of Indianapolis, the photograph includes the traditional "Copyrighted by Goodwin & Co. NY" to the left, and the player identification "White, 3d B., Detroit" at the base of the photo, both in white lettering. The mount, instead of featuring an ad for Old Judge Cigarettes, features an ad for Fearnaught Photography Studios of Indianapolis. This studio apparently provided some of the photographs for Goodwin, probably routinely taking pictures of visiting clubs when they were in the area. Collectors have long referred to cabinet cards of this style produced for Goodwin as "proofs." It is fascinating to note that this particular example originates directly from the family of Deacon White, and was once personally owned by him. This is a stunning cabinet card with flawless photo quality. On the reverse is a very elaborate advertisement for the photography studio. This is a very attractive card. REA sold this very card in a previous auction, and we like the image so much we actually use it as an illustration on the REA website on our "About" page (here's the link: http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/about/index.html). Crisp and clean front and back with virtually no chipping to the unusual brown borders. Two small squares of paper loss on the back relate to scrapbook removal long ago. The cabinet card is otherwise in spectacular Near Mint condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
