1912 Honus Wagner Harper Whiskey Trade Card (Ex-Halper)

Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,762.50

Addendum: The printed catalog description states that the 1912 Honus Wagner Harper Whiskey trade card has an American Association schedule on the back. This is an error! It has a National League schedule on the back.

Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Colorful and extremely rare advertising trade card features the legendary Honus Wagner promoting I. W. Harper Whiskey, "The Whiskey Your Grandfather Used." Wagner is pictured in a batting stance to the right of the card's title "Make A Hit." The complete 1912 National League schedule is printed on the reverse, along with the name of the Pennsylvania store owner who distributed this card. Wagner may have been opposed to the promotion of tobacco products, but apparently whiskey was O.K. In our opinion this is the very best of all 1910-era baseball-related trade cards. It is also extremely rare. There are probably less than a dozen of these cards in existence. This particular example was once part of the legendary Barry Halper Collection and it was prominently illustrated in the Halper catalog in 1999 (where it appeared as lot 2195). It is very bright and crisp, front and back, with even corner wear, and several heavy creases down the center of the card. The reverse is boldly printed with the pencil notation "30585" written on the top right edge. This is a very presentable example of this very substantial card, which, though it has not received a lot of attention from collectors, is one of the rarest, most interesting, and attractive of all Honus Wagner cards. Dimensions: 5 x 3.75 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,762.50
