1912 T227 Honest Long Cut Ty Cobb
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $5,287.50
Graded VG 40 by SGC. Very attractive medium-grade example of the legendary Ty Cobb from the 1912 T227 tobacco series, issued by Miners Extra and Honest Long Cut, far better than usually found for this very condition-sensitive issue. This is an outstanding example of one of Ty Cobb's rarest and most unusual tobacco cards. The T227 Cobb is far rarer than the T205 or T206 tobacco cards of Ty Cobb, but because T227s so rarely survive in technically high grades, they are rarely the focus of high-grade collectors. It is generally believed that T227s were packaged in tobacco pouches without protection from either tobacco or general handling. T227 "Series of Champions" cards are unique in design, and have the look of "giant T206s." There are only twenty-five cards in the set, including four ballplayers. This striking example of Cobb is perfectly clean both front and back, with vibrant colors, no stains, rounded corners, is centered slightly to the bottom right, and has a couple of light creases. The reverse has boldly printed text and advertisement. This is a very attractive example in extremely sharp condition for this rare, uniquely designed, and, in our opinion, extremely overlooked tobacco issue.
