1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge Cabinet Card - Bill Holbert, Brooklyn

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $2,643.75

Graded EX 60 by SGC. Stunning high-grade sample of one of the most revered of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues: the N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card series. The offered card features Brooklyn's Bill Holbert (throwing pose). Holbert was one of the best defensive catchers of his time. He was, however, not a power hitter. He holds the Major League record for most at bats in a career (2,335) without a homer, a record which may stand forever. The image on this card is very bold, with strong contrast and tremendous detail. The extraordinary quality of the photograph allows for one to see the pinstripes on his pants, the laces on his shirt, and even the laces on his shoes. Very bright, crisp, and clean, both front and back (one small age spot on reverse may be responsible for this card not grading even higher). This is an exceptionally high quality example from one of the nineteenth century's most substantial and highly regarded sets. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,643.75
