1912 T227 Honest Long Cut Ty Cobb
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,645.00
Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. The key card of Ty Cobb from the 1912 T227 tobacco series, issued by Miners Extra and Honest Long Cut. This is one of Ty Cobb's rarest and most unusual tobacco cards. This card was part of a larger collection of 1910-era cards which was saved for decades by the family of the original owner. The T227 Cobb is literally more than one hundred times rarer than the T205 or T206 tobacco cards of Ty Cobb, but its much greater scarcity is far from being fully reflected in its value. This may, in part, be because T227s so rarely survive in technically high grades that they are not a focus of high-grade collectors. It is believed that these cards are found in lower grades than other tobacco cards because cards from this set were packaged in tobacco pouches, without protection from either tobacco or general handling. T227 “Series of Champions” are unique in design, and have the look of “giant T206s.” There are only twenty-five cards in the set, which features champions from numerous sports, including four ballplayers. This is a very attractive card, with a far superior appearance than suggested by its technically accurate assigned grade. In FAIR condition, centered slightly to the bottom, very clean both front and back, with brilliant colors, no stains, and a very heavy vertical crease. The reverse of the card features a biography of Cobb and advertising for Honest Long Cut Tobacco. This is a very attractive low-grade example of this rare, uniquely designed, and in our opinion, extremely overlooked tobacco issue. One of the best of all Ty Cobb cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,645.00
