1888 N28 Allen & Ginter Complete Set (50)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $11,162.50
Complete set of fifty N28 Allen & Ginter "World's Champions" cards, including ten baseball players, among them Hall of Famers Cap Anson, John Clarkson, Charles Comiskey, Tim Keefe, Mike Kelly, and John Ward, plus two N162 Goodwin Champions (one which is Beecher, the very first football card). N28 Allen & Ginter "World's Champions" are considered by many to be the most beautiful of all nineteenth-century tobacco-card issues. The set features champions and stars of the day from a wide variety of sports. Of special significance in this complete collection, which has been a highlight in the collection of our consignor for the past thirty years, is a high-grade example of key card Cap Anson (SGC EX 60). Each of the ten baseball cards have clean backs with most presenting far better than their technically accurate assigned grade. We have selected eight cards to be graded by SGC. Baseball players: Anson (SGC EX 60), Bennett (Gd, light pencil marks on front, nice image), Caruthers (Vg, clean front, light corner wear), Clarkson (pinhole in the lower right, otherwise Vg-Ex), Comiskey (Pr-Fr due to a heavy horizontal crease, nice image), Glasscock (SGC EX+ 70), Keefe (Fr-Gd, light toning, reverse has a tiny touch of paper loss), Kelly (SGC EX 60), Mulvey (Vg, clean front, minor corner wear), Ward (Gd-Vg, front has minor paper loss along the bottom border). Boxers: Sullivan (Gd), Kilrain (Fr), and Dempsey (Vg). Rifle Shooters: Cody (Vg) and Oakley (Vg-Ex). Billiard Players: Daly (SGC NM 84), Dion (SGC NM 84), Schaefer (SGC EX/NM 80), and Slosson (SGC EX/NM 80). The 31 remaining cards range from Gd to Ex, averaging Vg, most with clean backs and very little paper loss. This is a very attractive mid-grade complete set of one of card collecting's most classic issues. Also included are two N162 Goodwin Champions: Beecher (the first football card, SGC GOOD 30) and Muldoon (wrestler, Vg). The equivalent SMR value for just the three graded N28 baseball players is $3,900. Total 52 cards (50 N28s and 2 N162s). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000+. SOLD FOR $11,162.50
