1914 Boston Garter Charlie Herzog
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $9,987.50
Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. Extremely rare sample card from the 1914 Boston Garter color series featuring Charles "Buck" Herzog. Boston Garters have always been one of the most highly prized of all early twentieth-century cards. In the past this set has been identified as being issued in 1913, but it now seems clear the correct year of issue is actually 1914. This is one of the cards that strongly supports a 1914 issue date. Though Herzog finished the 1913 season with the Giants, he is noted on the reverse of the card as being "Manager of Cincinnati National League team for the season of 1914." All Boston Garters are extremely rare. As noted on the reverse, only one card was issued with each box of twelve garters, and the cards were to be displayed by retailers in their store windows. The reverse includes a checklist for the entire set, and Herzog's batting and fielding records are listed through the 1913 season. The card is very clean, with some corner wear. At a glance this card appears much stronger than its GOOD 30 SGC grade, but has been appropriately downgraded due to a very tiny, 0.25-inch tear on the left edge. The card has no creases, bright colors, and a perfectly clean surface, both front and back, with very bold print on the reverse. This card is superior to most other known examples in terms of condition. It is free of the serious condition problems (most notably professional restoration, missing paper, chipping, and heavy creases) associated with most known examples of cards from this set. This is an outstanding sample from one of card collecting's most revered sets. Dimensions: 8.25 x 4 inches. Disclosure Notice: This card has been consigned to this auction from the personal collection of SGC principle David Forman. Mr. Forman purchased this card in the open market at public auction, already graded, just as is the case with all five SGC-graded cards Mr. Forman is selling from his personal collection in this auction. This disclosure is being made at his insistence (and with our blessing) to avoid even the potential appearance of impropriety. In addition to SGC's lifetime written guarantees, which apply to all SGC-graded cards, REA will allow the winner of any or all of the cards from Mr. Forman's personal collection a six-month full-return privilege for any reason if desired. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $9,987.50
