1916 W-UNC Joe Jackson
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $2,937.50
Graded POOR 10 by SGC. Exceedingly rare example of "Shoeless Joe" from the 1916 W-UNC Strip Card issue. This is the first example we have ever offered of one of Joe Jackson's rarest and most elusive cards. This is a particularly interesting set, not just because it is incredibly rare and was issued at a time during which there were few card sets, but because the images used were borrowed from the 1916 M101-4/5 Sporting News set. This issue was also produced on a much higher quality stock than strip cards issued just a few years later. It is interesting to note that The Standard Catalog states that these cards appear to be a strip-card issue; however, we have been unable confirm that, though it may very well be the case. The quality of the set is far superior to that of what are generally thought of as strip cards, most of which date from several years later. This incredible rarity is blank-backed and measures 1-3/4 x 2-3/4 inches. Jackson is featured in a classic batting pose photograph by Charles Conlon, which is the same photograph used to produce not only his M101-4 and M101-5 cards, but also used to produce his Cracker Jack card. This is one of the few cards of Jackson dating from the heart of his legendary career. It is also the only example of this card we have ever seen. This is an attractive low-grade example of one of Joe Jackson's rarest and most unusual vintage card issues. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,937.50
