1920-1926 Babe Ruth PSA-Graded Strip-Card Collection (6)

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $3,818.75

Collection of six different Babe Ruth strip cards, including several extremely rare ones, spanning the years 1921 to 1926, each graded or encapsulated by PSA: 1) 1920 W519: “Authentic.” Hand cut with typical slightly irregular cut on left side. Portrait from Ruth's first season with Yankees. 2) 1921 W516-2-2 #10: VG 3. Colorful strip-card issue, neatly cut, corner wear and crease in the lower right, otherwise Vg-Ex. 3) 1921 W551 panel of 5 cards: “Authentic.” Five-card uncut panel in virtually perfect condition includes Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Wally Pipp, Tris Speaker, and Jesse Barnes. These five players would be a great foundation for a 1920s All-Star team! Ruth is an "end card" on the strip and because of this there is a little rounding to the left corners, otherwise Ruth and all four additional cards are in Nr/Mt-Mt condition. When issued, these cards were sold in ten-card panels, so this uncut panel is one-half of a complete strip. 4) 1924 W-UNC: Extremely rare unnumbered maroon duotone (“Authentic”). In the "old days" we called these W590s but in more recent years we have not seen a consensus when referring to this rare set. It is listed in the Standard Catalog as "1924 W-UNC." Ruth is the only baseball player known in this set, which features a variety of subjects from different fields (athletics, cinema, history). These exotic strip-card rarities were printed in several different color varieties and with different card numbers. In addition to Ruth's name in the bottom border, tiny type at Ruth's right foot reads "Babe Ruth." 5) 1925-1931 W590: Outstanding example of this very rare and unusual looking strip card featuring a photo of Ruth that we believe is unique to this set. Encapsulated as “Authentic” due to being hand cut as intended, with Excellent appearance. Originally unlisted in the ACC, this strip card set was given the number W590 in later editions. It was part of a larger set cataloged as W580, which included movie stars, boxers, and other athletes. Bright and clean, with an exceptional early image of Ruth holding a bat against his left shoulder, and bold black print on the bottom border reads “Babe” Ruth – King of the Bat – New York, A.L.” 6) 1926 W512 #6: NM 7. Only one example graded at this level, with just two graded higher. Perfect hand cut, with four sharp corners. This multisport strip-card set includes fifty different subjects. Babe Ruth is one of only ten Major League ballplayers in the series. W512 is perhaps the most common Ruth strip card, but is rarely found in such pristine condition. This small lot includes several key strip-card rarities and could serve as the foundation for an advanced Ruth strip-card collection. This is a very substantial collection of six different Babe Ruth strip cards, dating from the heart of his Hall of Fame career. Total 6 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,818.75
