1921-1929 Exhibits Babe Ruth PSA-Graded Collection (6)
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $4,112.50
Very attractive technically low-grade collection of six assorted (three different and three duplicates) prewar Exhibit cards, spanning the years of 1921 to 1929, all featuring Hall of Famer Babe Ruth, all graded by PSA. 1-3) Three 1921 Exhibit Supply Co. (VG 3, GOOD 2, and PR-FR 1 [MK]). The key card from the set and one of Ruth's earliest cards featuring him with the Yankees. All three have some minor flaws (creases, corner wear, one has a pinhole) but each is overall very attractive and with outstanding picture quality. 4) Circa 1926-1929 Exhibit-Style Card (GOOD 2 [MK]). Classic Exhibit-style orange-tinted card was actually issued by a small competitor of the Exhibit Supply Company. The postcard format reverse includes the warning: “Not To be Used In Exhibit Machines.” Issued in several different colors. Never mailed. Solid Ex card downgraded by PSA for touches of paper loss along the edges on the reverse and remnants of an “x” which has been erased on the front (responsible for the "MK" qualifier). This is still a very clean striking card with an Ex-Mt appearance at a glance. 5-6) Two 1929-1930 Four-On-One Exhibits: Durocher/Gehrig/Koenig/Ruth (VG 3 and PR-FR 1). In 1929 the Exhibit Supply Co. of Chicago changed the design of its cards and began issuing Four-On-One Exhibits featuring four different players per card, all from the same team. Two examples of the key card from that first year Four-On-One set, featuring Yankee standouts Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Leo Durocher, and Mark Koenig. We grade the PSA 3 VG example as only Good. The lower-graded blue-tinted PSA 1 example is actually the better looking of these two cards in our eyes. This card has a very sharp-looking Vg-Ex front but has been appropriately downgraded due to paper loss in the corners of the reverse (related to long ago being mounted in an album and removed). This is a very affordable technically low-grade collection of six high-quality cards, all featuring Babe Ruth (and including two featuring Lou Gehrig) from three different rare Exhibit (or Exhibit style) issues. Total 6 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $4,112.50
