1921 D350-3 Standard Biscuit Babe Ruth
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $8,225.00
Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. This is an extraordinary rarity. D350-3 Standard Biscuit Company (the rarest of the three Standard Biscuit advertising issues) cards are very similar to E121 American Caramel (Series of 80). These cards, however, were Issued by a bakery company, the Standard Biscuit Company of San Francisco, and feature advertising for that company on the reverse. D350-3 Standard Biscuits are so rare that the The Standard Catalog lists only fifteen different subjects known, though it is theoretically possible that all eighty players from the E121 series could exist. They are so rare that it is not certain how many different cards were actually issued or how closely the set parallels E121. This is naturally one of Ruth's rarest cards (we have never even seen another). This is also one of the very few Ruth cards dating from the early 1920s. It is interesting to note that Ruth is pictured on this card in a Boston uniform, though he is appropriately identified below as a member of the New York Americans. "Boston" (mostly covered by Ruth's throwing arm) can be clearly seen across Ruth's chest upon close examination. In fact, this photograph of Ruth is the very same image which was used on Ruth's 1917 E135 Collins-McCarthy candy card. Apparently, the Standard Biscuit Company was going to print and did not have the time to pursue an updated image of Ruth with his new team. This very attractive card of Babe Ruth displays a sharp, clear image, with even wear to the corners, a tiny, insignificant crease in the extreme upper right corner, and 40/60 left-to-right centering. The card has been downgraded to GOOD 30 by SGC because of the two small stray blue lines (appears to be pencil marks) just to the left of Ruth and a little soiling on the reverse. It is otherwise in Vg-Ex condition. The reverse has an advertisement for Standard Biscuit Company with bold, crisp text. This is a very attractive example of an extreme rarity and would be a worthy addition to any world-class Babe Ruth or sample-card collection. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $8,225.00
