1927-1936 Zeenut Card Collection Including Joe DiMaggio Rookie Card (166 cards)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $9,400.00
Presented is an impressive Zeenut card collection featuring PCL players, comprised of 166 cards (134 different) spanning the years 1927 to 1936. The highlight of the collection is the Joe DiMaggio rookie card. The 1934 Zeenut DiMaggio is one of the most extraordinary and interesting of all baseball cards. It is Joe DiMaggio's true rookie card, featuring him with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League in the earliest days of his professional baseball career. This is an original-owner collection that is totally unpicked and has never seen the light of day from the 1930s until now. In addition to the 1934 Joe DiMaggio rookie card (name misspelled "DeMaggio" as on all Zeenuts), this collection also features a very high-grade Lefty O'Doul, and many other significant PCL stars, including many players that earlier or later played in the major leagues. Zeenuts were first issued in 1911 and sets continued to be issued into the late 1930s. This is a very substantial collection from this long-running PCL card issuer, dating from the later years of the Zeenut run. Condition ranges from Poor to Vg-Ex, with equal representation of each grade. In terms of condition, many Zeenut collectors would call this a fairly typical group, though by chance the Joe D and O'Doul cards are particularly strong. As is usually the case with Zeenuts, the coupon at the bottom of each card has been neatly clipped away, as intended, to be redeemed for valuable prizes. 1) 1927 Zeenut (6 cards): Brown, Caveney, Cox, Frederick, Krug, and Vitt. 2) 1928 Zeenut (8 cards): Bassler, Bigbee (Portland), Fullerton, Knothe, Mulligan, Vitt, Wera, and Wetzel. 3) 1929 Zeenut (12 cards): Bassler, Cascarella, Jahn, Koehler, Krug, Rego, Ritter, Rumler, Tomlin, Warren, Webb, and Weustling. 4) 1930 Zeenut (28 cards, 23 different): Backer, Barbee, two Bassler, two Brown, two Brucker, Burkett, Carlyle, Coyle, two Gould, Green, Hillis, House, Johnson (Seattle), Knothe, Kunz, Lawrence, Muller, Page, Rumler, Severeid, Sigafoos, two Trembly, and Vinci. 5) 1931 Zeenut (36 cards, 31 different): two Abbott, two Bowman, two Camilli, two Carlyle, Chesterfield, Demaree (Note: this former Major League pitcher is most noted for his unique design of the R304 series), Fenton, Fitzpatrick, Fullerton, Gazella, Hale, Hannah, Herrmann, Kohler, Lee, Moss, Parker, two Posedel, Rhiel, Rohwer, Ryan, Schulte, Severeid, Shellenback, Summa, Walters, Wetzel, Wirts, Wise, Woodall, and Vinci. 6) 1933-1936 Zeenut (76 cards, 54 different): three Backer, Ballou, two Borja, Caveney (name incorrect), Chelini, two Deviveiros, Joe DiMaggio rookie card (batting pose, SGC GOOD 30, bright and clean both front and back, with outstanding contrast, and even corner wear with slightly more wear on the lower right. Solid Vg-Ex card downgraded by SGC due to a few very light wrinkles, otherwise the card displays a superior overall appearance), Donovan, Douglas, Durst, Fenton, Fitzpatrick, two Funk, Garibaldi, three Glaister, Hafey, two Haney, Hartwig, Henderson, three Herrmann, Horne, House, two Hunt, Johns, Joiner, Jolly, Kallio, Kampouris, Kelly (Oakland), two Kintana, two Lahman, two Lieber, Mailho, Mails, McEvoy, McIsaacs, two McMullen, Nitcholas, Lefty O'Doul (black sleeves, SGC VG/EX 50), two Ostenberg, Outen, three Page, Palmisano, Phebus, two Pool, Radonitz, Raimondi, Rhyne, Salvo, four Sever, Steinbacker, Stutz, Thurston, and Wertz.
