1920s Lou Gehrig Cards (2)
Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,175.00
Two unusual Lou Gehrig cards from two different sets from the 1920s: 1) 1927 W560 Lou Gehrig. Graded NM/MT 88 by SGC. Extremely attractive high-grade example which is flawlessly handcut. The W560 series has one of the few cards of Gehrig dating from the Yankees historic 1927 season. Issued in uncut sheets of sixteen cards, these cards were intended to be cut up to create a playing-card deck. The set includes forty-nine baseball players (including Ruth and Gehrig) plus a few additional prominent sporting figures of the day (Jack Dempsey, Ken Strong, etc.). 2) 1928 Yeungling's Ice Cream #26 Lou Gehrig. Graded EX 5 by PSA. One of only seven example graded at this level. The set is identical in design to E210 York Caramels, Tharps Ice Cream, and W502, but the reverse of each card features advertising for Yeungling’s Ice Cream. The reverse informs kids that a prize will be given for each Babe Ruth card turned in and that "a gallon of Yeungling's ice cream will be delivered in exchange for a complete set of sixty cards." Bright and clean, both front and back, with just a hint of border toning, a slight "diamond" cut, and a touch of wear to the corners. These are two extremely rare cards of Gehrig from the 1920s. The inferior production quality of most cards from this era has kept these cards relatively affordable, though the excellent value they represent has earned them a growing appreciation among advanced collectors in recent years. Both of these cards are key cards from their respective sets. Total 2 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,175.00
