1933 R319 Goudey Complete Set of 239 (No #106 Lajoie)

Starting Bid - $5,000.00 , Sold For - $17,625.00

70% of this set ranges from Ex to Nr/Mt condition. There is some serious value to this set represented by just with the four Babe Ruth and two Lou Gehrig cards. Five of these six key cards are graded VG-EX 4 by PSA and one is graded VG 3 (Ruth #181). Just the five PSA VG-EX 4 key cards (three Ruths and two Gehrigs) alone list for $9,400 in the SMR (this figure does not include the PSA VG 3 Ruth or the other 233 cards in the set). A more detailed condition composite of the set follows: 10% Ex, 60% Vg-Ex to Vg-Ex/Ex, 15% Vg, 15% lesser (includes a number of cards, including sixteen graded individually below, with a Vg to Vg-Ex appearance, but which upon very close examination appear to possibly have a very slight trim). Put together card by card over a period of years, with an emphasis on overall eye appeal, this set is particularly striking for the care of its assembly, with most of the cards bright, crisp, very attractive, and free of creases. The vast majority of cards in the set have been downgraded from Excellent to the Vg-Ex to Vg-Ex/Ex range primarily due to corner wear. This is a very consistent and carefully assembled set, in an extremely desirable grade. The lower-graded cards in the condition composite, in most cases, are cards that have a similar appearance to the rest of the set, but under close examination we think have a very slight trim. The 1933 Goudey set is the first major gum-card set of the 1930s and is universally recognized as the most popular and significant set of the era. Highlighted by four Babe Ruths and two Lou Gehrigs, the set includes all the stars of the 1930s, including an incredible sixty-two Hall of Famers (all of which are graded individually below). All four Babe Ruth cards and both Lou Gehrig cards have been graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: #1 Bengough (Gd-Vg), 2 Vance (Vg-Ex), 5 Herman (Gd-Vg), 7 Lyons (Vg), 19 Dickey (Vg/Vg-Ex), 20 Terry (Vg/Vg-Ex), 22 Traynor (Vg-Ex/Ex), 23 Cuyler (Ex), 25 Waner (Vg), 29 Foxx (Vg-Ex/Ex), 31 Lazzeri (Vg-Ex), 35 Simmons (Vg-Ex/Ex), 42 Collins (Vg-Ex), 44 Bottomley (Vg-Ex), 47 Manush (Vg/Vg-Ex), 49 Frisch (Vg), 53 Ruth (PSA VG-EX 4), 56 Ruffing (Vg), 60 Hoyt (slight trim), 63 Cronin (slight trim), 64 Grimes (Vg-Ex/Ex), 73 Haines (Vg-Ex/Ex), 74 Rixey (Vg-Ex), 76 Cochrane (Vg-Ex/Ex), 79 Faber (Vg-Ex/Ex), 89 Speaker (Vg), 92 Gehrig (PSA VG-EX 4), 102 Jackson (Vg/Vg-Ex), 103 Coombs (Vg/Vg-Ex), 107 Manush (slight trim), 109 Cronin (appears sheet-cut), 110 Goslin (slight trim), 117 Maranville (Vg), 119 Hornsby (slight trim), 125 Terry (slight trim), 127 Ott (slight trim), 128 Klein (slight trim), 133 Lindstrom (Vg), 134 Rice (Vg), 138 Pennock (Vg), 144 Ruth (PSA VG-EX 4), 147 Durocher (Vg-Ex), 149 Ruth (PSA VG-EX 4), 154 Foxx (Vg), 158 Berg (slight trim), 160 Gehrig (PSA VG-EX 4) , 164 Waner (slight trim), 168 Goslin (Vg), 181 Ruth (PSA VG 3) , 187 Manush (slight trim), 188 Hornsby (Vg-Ex/Ex), 189 Cronin (Vg), 194 Averill (slight trim), 197 Ferrell (Gd-Vg), 202 Hartnett (Vg), 207 Ott (Vg), 211 Wilson (Vg/Vg-Ex), 216 Gomez (Vg/Vg-Ex), 220 Grove (slight trim), 222 Gehringer (Vg), 223 Dean (Vg), 229 Vaughan (Vg), 230 Hubbell (Vg), 234 Hubbell (slight trim), and 240 Schumacher (slight trim). In a world where a single high-grade 1933 Goudey key card can sell for more than this entire set, a carefully assembled mid-grade set such as this is rarely offered, and is widely appreciated for the outstanding value it represents. With sixty-two Hall of Famers, including four Ruths and two Gehrigs, this set also naturally has a tremendous break value as well. Total 239 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000+. SOLD FOR $17,625.00
