1934 R304 Al Demaree Die-Cut #50 Rogers Hornsby
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $1,997.50
Graded EX 5 by PSA. Only "1 of 1" graded by PSA with no other examples at any level graded by PSA. R304 Demaree Die-Cut of Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby of the St. Louis Browns. This is the first R304 of Hornsby we have ever seen. Issued by Chicago’s Dietz Gum Company in 1934, Demaree die-cuts are among the rarest of all 1930s gum issues. Their unique design combines black-and-white photographic player portraits with cartoon body art drawn by former Major League pitcher Al Demaree (hence, the name “Demaree die-cuts”). The fragile design of all die-cut cards and the easily broken tabs at the base of R304s that allow them to stand, make complete, high-grade examples all the rarer. This R304 of Roger Hornsby has survived complete, with standup tab intact. Crisp and clean, both front and back, the card appears at a glance as Ex-Mt, and has been downgraded due to a small spot of age toning below the card number. We have seen a great deal of collector interest in R304s in recent years but have seen very few cards offered at auction, making accurate pricing information for these cards particularly difficult to determine. The few cards that have been offered at auction have sold for considerably more than The Standard Catalog guide prices, but these results are so few and far between due to the rarity of R304s that collectors are pretty much on their own in evaluating the pricing structure of this issue. This is sometimes the case when dealing with cards of such extreme rarity. This is a very attractive example of one of the rarest of all Rogers Hornsby cards, from one of the rarest and most condition-sensitive of all prewar card issues. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
