1934 V94 Butterfinger Canadian Premium Near-Complete Set (50)
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $3,525.00
Issued in 1934 as a premium with Butterfinger and other candy products, and catalogued V94 in the American Card Catalog , this large format (6-1/2 x 8-1/2 inches) sepia-toned set is printed on thin stock and was issued in Canada. This set is almost identical to the U.S. Butterfinger issue (R310) but is smaller and includes a number of players not found in the U.S. series. Offered is an exceptional near-complete set featuring 50 of the supposedly 59 cards (58 plus one variation) in the set. Our consignor, who has spent many years researching this set, believes that the set is complete at 55, not 59 cards (58 plus one variation) as checklisted in the Standard Catalog. The checklist in the Standard Catalog lists two different Foxx variations (name incorrect and name correct, as found in the American R310 Butterfinger set). Our consignor firmly believes that only the "name correct" version exists in the Canadian Butterfinger set. He is also confident that Ruth and Gehrig do not exist. This being said, we are confident that we don't know! We've never heard of or seen a set of V94s anywhere. In fact, this is the very first time we can recall ever even handling any examples of this rare set. It certainly is possible that this collection may only be missing six premiums (Gomez, Orsatti, Salveson, Stout, P. Waner, and Worthington) for completion as believed by our very knowledgeable consignor. Butterfinger selected the greatest stars of the day for inclusion in this premium set. Keys: Averill (Ex-Mt), Bottomley (tiny pinholes at the top and bottom borders and pencil notation on back, otherwise Ex), Cochrane (tiny pinholes at the top and bottom borders and pencil notation on back, otherwise Vg-Ex), Cronin (tiny 1/8" tear on right border, otherwise Ex), Dean (Ex), Dickey (Vg/Vg-Ex), Ferrell (tiny pinholes in the upper left and right corners, otherwise Ex), Foxx (Vg/Vg-Ex), Gehringer (1/4" tear on the right border, otherwise Vg/Vg-Ex), Grove (Ex), Hafey (tiny pinholes at the top and bottom borders and pencil notation on back, otherwise Ex), Harris (Vg/Vg-Ex), Hoyt (Vg-Ex), and Simmons (tiny pinholes at the top and bottom, otherwise Vg-Ex). Of the The balance of the cards, twenty grade from Vg-Ex to Ex, and fifteen are Vg (with a few slightly lesser). This is a tremendous clean and crisp near-set of V94 Butterfinger Canadian premiums; it should be stressed that all actually have an Excellent or better appearance at a glance across the board. Almost all grading less than Ex have only an extremely minor flaw that is not immediately apparent, perhaps a tiny crease. To the best of our knowledge this is the most complete set ever assembled, let alone offered at auction, of these rare premium cards, and an outstanding foundation for carrying on the challenging quest, begun by our consingor, of completing the V94 Butterfinger Canadian Premium set. Total 50 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $3,525.00
