1941 Play Ball Complete Set (72)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $4,112.50
Extremely attractive medium-grade complete set of the 1941 Play Ball series issued by Gum, Inc., one of card collecting's all-time classic gum issues, highlighted by what are among the most desirable cards of many of the era’s key stars, including Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, and Pee Wee Reese. We have selected seven cards to be graded by PSA. Keys: #1 Miller (Ex), 6 Hubbell (PSA VG-EX 4), 8 Ott (Vg), 10 Vaughan (15/85 T/B, otherwise Ex), 13 Foxx (PSA VG-EX 4), 14 T. Williams (PSA VG-EX 4), 15 Cronin (Vg), 18 Greenberg (Vg), 19 Gehringer (80/20 T/B, otherwise Ex-Mt), 20 Ruffing (30/70 L/R, otherwise Ex), 21 Keller (Vg-Ex), 39 Henrich (Ex), 54 Reese RC (PSA EX 5), 56 Vander Meer (Vg-Ex/Ex), 60 Klein (75/25 L/R and 30/70 T/B, otherwise Vg-Ex/Ex), 61 V. DiMaggio (Vg), 63 D. DiMaggio (Vg-Ex/Ex), 64 Doerr (10/90 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex), 70 Dickey (PSA VG-EX 4), 71 J. DiMaggio (PSA EX 5), and 72 Gomez (PSA VG-EX 4). The balance of the cards grade 75% Vg-Ex to Ex, and 25% Vg. Technically the set falls into the “very strong medium” grade category, but has an overall presentation of a technically much more expensive and higher-grade set. It would be hard to imagine any collector looking at this set and thinking anything but “Wow!” Early sets in this grade are especially desirable, representing the most solid and least volatile value in the world of vintage cards. The SMR value for just the seven PSA-graded cards (not including the 65 ungraded cards) is $3,150. Total 72 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,112.50
