1949 Lummis Peanut Butter and Sealtest Phillies (3)
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $2,115.00
Collection of three extremely rare regional Phillies cards (3.5 x 4.25 inches) both issued in 1949 in the Philadelphia area, one by Sealtest Dairy and the other by Lummis & Co. in 1949. Both companies used the same design (Sealtest used a peel-off sticker back), photos, and checklist of Phillies players to advertise their product on the reverse of each card in the 12-card set. Lummis & Co. offered a promotion of “Free Baseball Tickets” to Phillies games in exchange for two “Lummis Peanut Butter” labels on the back of their cards. A few small finds of Sealtest cards have surfaced over the years, but even a sample card of a Lummis Peanut Butter card is a great challenge to find. The two examples in this lot are the first Lummis Peanut Butter cards we've had in years. All three cards have been graded by SGC: 1949 Sealtest: Puddinhead Jones (NM 84) and 1949 Lummis Peanut Butter (2 cards): Bill Nicholson (VG 40, Near Mint appearance, harshly downgraded due to a few tiny ink marks, which we think are production-related, around the name “Bill”) and Eddie Waitkus (EX 60). Three very attractive, high-grade examples of these exceptionally rare postwar food issues, which advanced collectors recognize as among the rarest of all regional card issues. Total 3 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $2,115.00
