1951 Topps Connie Mack's All-Stars Complete Set (11)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $5,875.00

This landmark set issued by Topps in its first year in the baseball-card business features Connie Mack’s All-Time team of great players. Offered is a very attractive mid-grade complete set of eleven cards highlighted by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Six cards have been graded and encapsulated by PSA (we selected five of the six cards to be graded; one card - Alexander - was already graded when we received the set from our consignor). One thing about 1951 Topps Connie Mack All-Stars: because of their diecut design, there's so many little things that can get these cards downgraded that they tend to look a lot better than their technical grades suggest. That is certainly the case here. All cards are complete with backgrounds intact and grade as follows: Grover Alexander (PSA VG-EX 4), Mickey Cochrane (Ex), Eddie Collins (Vg), Jimmy Collins (Ex), Lou Gehrig (PSA VG 3), Walter Johnson (PSA EX 5, one of only five graded at this level with just two graded higher), Connie Mack (Ex with the right border showing a sliver of a yellow strip from a 1951 Topps team card as is typical for this card), Christy Mathewson (small piece of yellowed clear tape on the back, otherwise Vg), Babe Ruth (PSA EX 5), Tris Speaker (PSA NM 7, only one graded at this level with none graded higher), and Honus Wagner (PSA VG-EX 4). Because these diecut cards are designed to stand up by folding back the backgrounds, they are particularly prone to damage and are often found with the backgrounds damaged or completely removed. This is a very attractive medium-grade set of this milestone Topps issue: one of the rarest, most significant, and most condition-sensitive of all postwar card issues. The SMR value for just three of the six graded cards (not including the VG 3 Gehrig, VG-EX 4 Wagner, and VG-EX 4 Alexander, or the five ungraded cards) is $3,250. Total 11 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $5,875.00
