1951 Topps Connie Mack's All-Stars George Herman Ruth
Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,292.50
Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. The Connie Mack All-Stars set is extremely significant as this was one of the first major baseball card sets ever issued by Topps. Presented is an extraordinary medium-grade example of the key card from this landmark issue: George Herman Ruth. The 1951 Topps Connie Mack All-Stars were issued in packs with two-card panels of 1951 Topps Red or Blue Backs, and also in bundle packs with the 1951 Topps Red Back set and 1951 Topps team cards. These fragile cards were designed to have the tops “punched out,” allowing the cards to stand freely. Because of their unique die-cut design, and method of issue, they rarely survive without serious damage. The combination of the scarcity of this issue and their somewhat fragile die-cut design combine to make 1951 Topps Connie Mack All-Stars particularly challenging to collect in high grade. Offered is an exceptional mid-grade example of Babe Ruth. SGC has assigned the grade of VG/EX 50 to the card, but its eye appeal is far better. The design of the issue leaves many areas for potential downgrading by SGC. This card has been appropriately downgraded due to a slight miscut top to bottom, which leaves no top border, and the related slightly misaligned diecut punch. It is interesting to note that the the slightly larger bottom border shows a sliver of a yellow strip from a 1951 Topps team card. The die-cut triangle directly beneath Ruth is often punched out and completely missing; on this example it is complete and intact. The colors are spectacular. Both the front and back are bright and clean. The red text on the reverse is flawless and totally uninterrupted. This is a tremendous mid-grade example of this significant early Topps card for the type or Ruth collector. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,292.50
