1951 Topps "Blue Backs" Complete Uncut Panel Set (26 panels, 52 cards)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $18,800.00
Presented is one of the most extraordinary high-grade complete 1951 Topps "Blue Backs" sets in existence, in its rarest and most desirable original uncut two-card panel form. The landmark "Blue Backs" set is extremely significant as this was one of the first major baseball card sets ever issued by Topps. The 1951 Topps Blue Backs were issued in two-card packs along with the 1951 Topps Team cards and Connie Mack and Current All-Stars, and are considerably scarcer than their Red Back counterparts. It is very rare to see even a single surviving uncut panel of Blue Backs. The two-card panels were designed to be separated along the perforations. Few complete two-card panels survived this fate, let alone a complete set of twenty-six two-card panels (52 cards total). In fact, this is the very first complete set we have ever had the privilege of offering in this original panel form as issued. All twenty-six panels of this complete panel set have been graded and encapsulated by SGC. The SGC grades are as follows: Six MINT 96: #1-40 Yost/Wertz, 6-35 Schoendienst/Byrne (HOF), 9-13 Sain/Vernon, 20-33 Branca/Lenhardt, 22-44 Kuzava/Wyrostek, and 38-47 Noren/Wehmeier. Seven NM/MT 88: #3-11 Ashburn/Groth (HOF), 4-17 Ennis/Smalley, 5-37 Pesky/Doerr (HOF), 16-41 Dickson/Schmitz, 19-34 Masi/Torgeson, 30-31 Slaughter/Brissie (HOF), and 48-52 Cox/Chapman. Three NM 84: #15-42 Joost/Edwards, 18-24 Garver/Lollar, and 36-49 Fannin/Sauer. Two EX/NM 80: # 8-25 Sisler/Mele and 39-50 Lopat/Mize (HOF). Three EX+ 70: # 7-10 Staley/Page, 23-26 Trout/Carrasquel, and 27-43 Pafko/Jones. One EX 60: #21-32 Johnson/Elliot. Two VG-EX 50: #14-29 Munger/Hamner and 45-51 Pierce/Waitkus. One GOOD 30: #2-12 Majeski/Jethroe (a few small touches of paper loss on reverse). One POOR 10: #28-46 Priddy/Brecheen (two touches of paper loss on the top border). The four lesser graded panels each have a bright, crisp Near Mint to Nr/Mt-Mt appearance but have been technically graded very harshly by SGC due to very tiny surface factory wrinkles visible on the reverses that are natural to the set and related to production. Blue Backs are one of the most significant of all early 1950s gum issues. This set represents Topps' first major effort in the baseball card business. This complete set is easily one of the finest sets in existence. The SMR notes for the Red Backs that "complete 2-card panels sell for approximately 40% more than individual combined card values" but beyond this, possibly because of their rarity, we have seen no specific price guide references to Blue Back 2-card panels in price guides. Total 26 panels representing 52 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $18,800.00
