1953-1955 Dormand Postcard Collection Including Five Large (9 x 12-inch) Mantles (50)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $11,750.00
This incredible collection of 1953-1955 Dormand postcards is an exciting recent find. It is comprised of ten oversized Dormand postcards (including five Mickey Mantles) and twenty-five standard Dormand postcards (including two Mantle bat-on-shoulder cards), plus an additional fifteen cards with blank backs, all of Joe Collins. Dormand postcards were produced by photographer Louis Dormand by special order for selected players from several teams, including the Yankees and Dodgers, for use by players to honor fan requests for photos and autographs. They were also also available for sale directly from Louis Dormand. One of the most exciting aspects of this group, in addition to being comprised of cards that have not been found in any quantity (several cards have been discovered in large quantities in recent years) is the fact that this collection is accompanied by an original Dormand mailing envelope (postmarked 1954) and an original Dormand Postcard retail ordering form that explains how they were sold to the public. We have never seen an original envelope or order form before. The mail-order form (approx 5 x 4 inches) is cheaply printed and designed to be filled out by the buyer and sent in to Dormand. The front advertises for the standard postcards, and customers were supposed to supply their name and address and check off the players being ordered. The price was ten cents for each postcard, three for a quarter, or fifteen cards for a dollar. The back of the order form is even more fascinating as it advertises the rare large-format Dormand postcards (“Now Available. Large 9 x 12 inch – Beautiful Natural Color Photo Of Mickey Mantle or Phil Rizzuto - Price 50 cents each Post Paid – Ideal For Framing or Your Den.”) The far more expensive cost of the larger cards no doubt accounts for their far greater rarity today. This is an exciting small find of Dormands which have literally been stored away untouched since 1954. The Collection: 1) The extremely rare oversized postcards (9 x 12 inches) include five of Mickey Mantle (bat-on-shoulder pose, all grade Nr/Mt overall) and five of Phil Rizzuto (all grade Nr/Mt overall). 2) The twenty-five standard size Dormand postcards (24 different) featuring all Yankees (Ex overall but includes several Nr/Mt) includes two #111 Mickey Mantle (bat on shoulder pose, both grading Nr/Mt). The balance of the postcards are #101b Rizzuto (auto. parallel to the top, Vg-Ex), 102 Berra (Ex), 103, 104, 105, 106, 108, 109, 110, 112 Mize (Ex), 113 Stengel (auto. on top, Ex), 115 Ford (Ex), 116, 118, 119, 123, 126, 130 Martin (Ex), 132, 133 Slaughter (Ex-Mt), 134, 135, and 136. Also included are fifteen blank-back Joe Collins cards (Ex-Mt overall). According to the 2008 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards these Dormand large-size cards and postcards, in Nr/Mt condition, have a total book value of $7,465 (9 x 12 Mantles lists for $1,200 each, Rizzuto lists for $55). This is a very interesting and unique original find of 1953-1955 Dormand Postcards. Total 50 cards (40 small, ten large). Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $11,750.00
