1887 N184 W. S. Kimball Champions Baseball Near-Complete Set SGC-Graded (3 of 4 cards)
Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $2,937.50
Outstanding bright and clean collection of three different baseball players (out of only four ballplayers in the set) from the unusual and scarce 1887 N184 W. S. Kimball & Co.'s "Champions of Games and Sports" series, each graded and encapsulated by SGC or PSA. Missing only one card, Tip O'Neil, for completion of all four ballplayers in the set. Condition Report: 1) E.A. Burch (PSA VG 3), clean front and back, a light crease in the upper left, and a little corner wear. 2) Dell Darling (SGC VG 40), corner wear and some light scattered white background flecks of little consequence, bright and clean card. 3) Hardie Henderson (SGC VG 40), strong corners, an insignificant blue mark and tiny edge chip on reverse, particularly sharp looking card for the grade. All three cards are very attractive, with vibrant colors, and flawless registration. Kimballs are considered by many to be one of the most beautiful of all the nineteenth-century tobacco issues. The set features champions and stars of the day from a wide variety of sports. Although the baseball players featured in the set are not Hall of Famers, each was a very popular star at the time. This is an exceptional group of three cards from one of the most stunning and beautifully designed of all nineteenth-century tobacco issues. Total 3 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $2,937.50
