1969 Topps Super Complete Set: #4 PSA Set Registry

Starting Bid - $5,000.00 , Sold For - $17,625.00

Ultra high-grade MINT complete set of the classic 1969 Topps Super Baseball set, entirely graded by PSA, with an astounding average grade of 9.60. The sixty-six cards in the set are comprised of forty PSA Gem Mint 10s and twenty-six PSA Mint 9s. This is actually the highest-graded set for any issue from any era we have ever offered! We had to call the consignor just to ask him how he happened to have a set in such incredible high grade. We were curious if it was put together card by card, purchased as a set already graded, or whatever the explanation might be. His answer was fascinating. He purchased this set in 1970 as a youngster from The Card Collectors Company of New York, then owned by legendary hobby pioneer and former Topps art and creative director Woody Gelman. Gelman offered sets for sale by mail for a very short time in 1970 and our consignor was one of the few who actually ordered one. (They were very expensive at the time as so few sets were available.) He put them away, carefully preserved, and in recent years learned of PSA and got the entire set graded. (Note: According to the consignor he did upgrade three cards from the original set, Roy White and Hank Aaron to PSA GEM MINT 10s, and Tom Seaver to PSA MINT 9.) This sixty-six card test set was issued on an extremely limited test basis, and has withstood the test of time as one of the most classic and highly prized sets of the era. This is a spectacularly high grade complete set, with all of the cards graded and encapsulated GEM MINT 10 or MINT 9 by PSA as follows: Forty PSA GEM MINT 10: #2 F. Robinson (HOF), 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 18, 20, 22, 23, 25, 26, 28 Jackson (HOF), 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34 Aaron (HOF), 35, 36, 38, 40, 43, 44, 45, 47, 48, 50, 51, 54, 55, 56, 57, 59, 60 Gibson (HOF), and 63. Twenty-Six PSA MINT 9: #1, 3 B. Robinson (HOF), 5 Yaz (HOF), 10 Aparicio (HOF), 11, 12, 16, 17, 19 Killebrew (HOF), 21, 24 Mantle (HOF), 27, 37 Jenkins (HOF), 39 B. Williams (HOF), 41 Rose, 42 Morgan (HOF), 46 Drysdale (HOF), 49, 52 Seaver (HOF), 53 Allen, 58 Clemente (HOF), 61, 62, 64 Marichal (HOF), 65 Mays (HOF), and 66 McCovey (HOF). The SMR value for just the twenty-six PSA MINT 9 cards is $8,900 (the SMR does not list a value for Gem Mint 10s). This is an amazing MINT set with tremendous break value. Total 66 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $17,625.00
