1977 Topps New York Yankees Burger King Progressive Proof Uncut Sheets (10)
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $587.50
Ten 1977 Topps New York Yankees team set color process sheets, each featuring twenty-two-cards from the Burger King series. The twenty-two cards featured on each sheet represent the Burger King Yankees' team set which was produced by Topps and distributed at Burger King restaurant chains in 1977. These rare color progression proof sheets are likely unique, and were intended for use by the printer to help check and correct colors prior to printing production quantities. Hall of Famers and stars on each sheet include Jim "Catfish" Hunter, Reggie Jackson, Thurman Munson, Ron Guidry, Bucky Dent, Yankees team, etc. This was the famous set that a card of Lou Pinella was added to, by special request of George Steinbrenner. The story was that the Yankee owner's son was upset that his favorite player, Lou Pinella, was not included in the set. Pinella is not on these proof sheets because that card was produced later in a special printing of just that card. This story is largely forgotten today, but in the hobby in 1977 it was a very big deal, and rare Pinella cards were selling for a huge premium, briefly for as much as $100 each. It is very rare to find a complete "matched set" run of Topps color process sheets such as this, including every color process. Many collectors are familiar with the color progression proof cards sold by the Topps Vault on eBay which often bring extremely high prices offered individually. Those individual color process cards have been cut from color progression sheets such as those offered here. The ten proof sheets in this lot represent a total of 220 proof cards (22 x 10 = 220). These sheets (and the color process cards) on them may be unique. The ten sheets all have blank backs and each features a different color process: 1) yellow, blue, red, and black printing; 2) red and black printing; 3) black printing; 4) yellow, blue, and red printing; 5) blue and red printing; 6) yellow and red printing; 7) red printing; 8) yellow and blue printing; 9) blue printing; and 10) yellow printing. Each of these color combinations represents a step toward the final process with all colors. The complete run of all ten color process sheets were stapled together in "book form" in the left margin when produced, for easy review by the printer. They could easily be separated. The top final color process sheet is ink-stamp dated "May 23, 1977" in the lower margin. The sheets are in Excellent to Mint condition. The cards on the sheets are in Nr/Mt-Mt or Mint condition. Dimensions: Each sheet 28.5 x 11 inches. Total 10 sheets. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $587.50
