1918 Honus Wagner Signed Check

Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,410.00

Bank check, dated December 9, 1918, signed by Honus Wagner. The check, made out to J.H. Burgan & Son in the amount of $25.46, is drawn on the Carnegie Trust Company and is signed “John H. Wagner” along the base. Wagner’s signature has been beautifully scripted in black fountain pen and grades “9.” This check has a particularly strong signature which is not affected by any stamps or cancellations, which is so often the case with Wagner checks. A "J.H. Burgan & Son" stamped endorsement appears on the reverse. Autograph collectors have always placed a special premium on checks due to their inherent authenticity. The offered Wagner check is an extremely early example and dates just one year after his retirement from baseball. The check (8.5 x 3 inches) displays a rough top left border (small amount of paper loss) and two light vertical fold lines. Standard bank cancellation stamps appear on both the front and reverse. It should be noted that the border flaw could easily be matted out and the check is otherwise in Excellent condition. Together with an 8 x 10-inch photo card of Wagner that would be ideal for framing together with the check. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,410.00
