Extraordinary Hall of Fame Signed Check Collection (57)
Starting Bid - $2,500.00 , Sold For - $4,700.00
Collection of fifty-seven checks signed by fifty-eight different members of the Baseball Hall of Fame. This is a simply extraordinary collection, assembled by a very advanced collector with great care, one check at a time, over a period of many years. Full canceled checks of Hall of Famers have always been a very popular area of collecting, but few collections have ever been assembled featuring so many different Hall of Famers. For some players, even many whose signatures are not extremely valuable, personal checks are rare, and in some cases not available at all. This is one of the least understood elements of Hall of Fame check collecting, and one of the reasons it is such an interesting and challenging area. This is the largest collection of Hall of Famer personal checks we have ever seen or offered, though we do know of more advanced collections which include all of these and many additional rarities. While this collection does include many particularly valuable checks (a Pennock check, for example, sold in the 2007 REA auction all alone for $940, and a Jackie Robinson check routinely sells for a similar amount; these are just two of the fifty-eight checks included in this collection), the collection does not include the most expensive "commodity" checks such as Ruth, Wagner, and Cobb. These missing checks, though costly, are frequently available and could easily be added. This is a collection which could easily serve as outstanding foundation in the assembly of a complete collection of all possible Hall of Fame checks. Fifty-one of the checks are either personal or business checks signed on the front. The other six checks have been made out to the player and are endorsed on the reverse. One of the checks, made out to Spahn, is signed by Chub Feeney on the front and endorsed by Spahn on the reverse. Unless otherwise noted, all of the checks are personal checks (some include the preprinted name of a spouse as well) and all have been signed in either blue or black ink (with signatures each grading "9" or "10"). The fifty-six Hall of Fame inductees represented here, along with the date for each check, are as follows: Alston (8/17/61), Averill (5/31/74), Barrow (6/6/53, bank check, small tear, no paper loss), Boudreau (7/10/95), Brock (2/19/74), Carey (6/17/70, bank check), Carlton (8/3/95, business check), Cepeda (4/12/89), Chandler (6/5/89), Chylak (7/24/79, New York Yankees business check, endorsed by Chylak on the reverse), Cochrane (9/13/59), Combs (4/12/65, bank check), Dandridge (9/14/87), Day (7/25/94), Dickey (2/22/84), Doerr (4/27/77, bank check), Ford (5/17/88, business check), Fox (6/18/62, bank check), Frisch (9/10/71), Grimes (5/15/46, bank check made out to cash and endorsed by Grimes on the reverse), Grove (11/22/54, bank check), Haines (11/21/75), Herman (7/30/73), Hooper (5/9/66), Hubbard (1/6/65, bank check), Hubbell (1/23/85), Hunter (4/4/75, business check from Joe Garagiola Enterprises, Inc., signed by Garagiola and endorsed by Hunter on the reverse), Irvin (2/22/88), R. Jackson (4/4/75, business check from Joe Garagiola Enterprises, Inc., signed by Garagiola and endorsed by Jackson on the reverse), Jenkins (12/18/90), J. Johnson (7/30/86), G. Kelly (11/22/34, bank check), Kiner (10/9/85), Lasorda (4/4/75, business check from Joe Garagiola Enterprises, Inc., signed by Garagiola and endorsed by Lasorda on the reverse), Leonard (11/12/88, post-stroke check), Lyons (12/3/69, bank check), Manush (10/19/70, bank check), McCovey (1/20/93, small tear in the upper left border, paper loss), Palmer (11/2/89), Pennock (2/11/43, bank check), Perry (1/27/83), Rixey (2/17/66, bank check), Roberts (8/29/75), J. Robinson (2/21/69, bank check), Roush (8/7/72), Sewell (6/10/49, bank check), Simmons (1/12/53, bank check), Sisler (9/6/66, bank check), Slaughter (11/3/86), Spahn (8/19/74, National League business check, signed by Chub Feeney on the front and endorsed by Spahn on the reverse), Stengel (7/10/74), Terry (5/11/59, Jacksonville Baseball Company business check), Traynor (4/4/70, bank check), Veeck (3/30/77, business check from Joe Garagiola Enterprises, Inc., endorsed by Veeck on the reverse), Wheat (4/12/57, bank check), Wilhelm (7/27/91), and Yastrzemski (11/24/93). The majority of the checks measure approximately 6 x 2.75 inches, with some larger-format checks averaging 8.75 x 3 inches. All display normal bank cancellation stamps and/or holes. Approximately 35% of the checks have one or two light vertical folds, as is often the case with checks, and three exhibit tears. The Hubbard and Rixey checks both display tape residue on the reverse from having once been previously mounted. Overall, the entire collection is in Excellent to Mint condition. The total SMR value of the fifty-one checks signed on the front (not including the six additional checks which are signed on the reverse, which includes Nestor Chylack) is $9,380. This total includes many checks that are listed at very modest levels simply because the player's signature is not rare, but whose personal checks might be very hard to find. This is an outstanding Hall of Fame check collection. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 57 checks. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $4,700.00
