1920 New York Yankees Signed Notebook - 24 Signatures

Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $3,525.00

This remarkable small notebook, used as an autograph book, dates from Babe Ruth’s first season with the Yankees and features the signatures of twenty-four members of the 1920 Yankees. Included are many extremely rare and desirable signatures, all in perfect condition, perfectly preserved and protected from all elements, including light, in the pages of the notebook. Unfortunately, the Ruth signature included in the book has been deemed by JSA to be a classic secretarial example from the period (not an uncommon occurrence), but all of the others are authentic and many are particularly rare. Ideally, each page displays just a single signature, allowing for an easy “breakup” of the book if so desired. Also, each player has added the year, 1920, after his signature, thereby definitely dating this book to the 1920 season. All of the signatures have been penned in either black or blue fountain pen and grade “9” or “10.” The signatures offered here are those of Sammy Vick, Frank Gleich, Joe Lucey, Roger Peckinpaugh, Joe Hannah, Aaron Ward, Bob McGraw, Muddy Ruel, Rip Collins, Bob Meusel, Fred Hofmann, Ernie Shore, Wally Pipp, George Mogridge, Ping Bodie, Carl Mays, Duffy Lewis, Del Pratt, Lefty O’Doul, Herb Thormahlen, Wilson Fewster, Jack Quinn, Babe Ruth (secretarial), and Bob Shawkey. The cover of the notebook (3 x 5 inches) displays a vintage inscription reading “To Bobby Holzman – Yankee Club 1920 – Joseph Seater.” This is an outstanding collection of vintage Yankees signatures, many of which remain high on the want list of many collectors. The fact that each of these signatures has been boldly scripted on an individual page makes each one a fine candidate for future grading and encapsulation. The page displaying the Vick signature has detached from the spine; otherwise all of the pages are intact and remain clean and bright. The covers exhibit moderate wear, including a small tape repair along the top of the spine. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,525.00
