Offered here is a extraordinary treasure trove of twenty-nine early 1920s St. Louis Cardinals Major League player contracts (plus one 1921 Dodgers contract). Ideally, nineteen of the contracts have been signed by Hall of Fame executive Branch Rickey in his capacity as vice president of the club. Rickey was also the manager of the Cardinals from 1919 through 1925. All of the contracts are official National League Player's Contracts and date between the years 1919 and 1922. Ten of the contracts have also been signed on the front by National League President John Heydler (twelve contracts bear facsimile Heydler signatures stamped on the front). Unless otherwise noted, the contracts range in grade from Very Good to Excellent and the signatures grade "9/10." All of the contracts have been signed by the respective player with the exception of both Ames contracts. In our listing, we are noting the date of the contract, the name of the player to whom it is issued, and the name of the team official who has signed it. 1) 9/19/19, Michael Kircher, Branch Rickey (for the 1920 season). 2) 9/21/19, Austin McHenry, Branch Rickey ("8," for the 1920 season). 3) 9/21/19, Fred Molliwitz, Branch Rickey ("7," for the 1920 season). 4) 12/19/19, Frank Keck, Branch Rickey ("6," for the 1920 season). 5-6) 1/27/20, Leon Ames, Sam Breadon (two contracts). 7) 2/20/20, Marvin Goodwin, Branch Rickey . 8) 2/28/20, Elmer Jacobs, Branch Rickey . 9) 4/7/20, Oscar Tuero, Sam Breadon. 10) 4/14/20, Leslie Mann, George Grant. 11) 6/17/20, Harold Kime, Branch Rickey . 12) 8/17/20, Pete Zoeller, Sam Breadon. 13) 9/6/20, George Lyons, Branch Rickey ("8"). 14) 12/22/20, John Lavan, Branch Rickey (even though it was signed in 1920, according to the dating on the front, this contract is for the 1922 season; the word "Canceled" is written across the front in black fountain pen). 15) 12/22/20, John Lavan, Branch Rickey (even though it was signed in 1920, according to the dating on the front, this contract is for the 1923 season). 16) 1/12/21, Vernon Clemons, Branch Rickey (Gd, numerous tears). 17) 1/24/21, Burt Shotton, Branch Rickey ("8"). 18) 1/25/21, Marvin Goodwin, Branch Rickey . 19) 1/25/21, Louis North, Sam Breadon. 20) 1/25/21, Ray Blades, Sam Breadon (Gd, with heavy staining). 21) 1/27/21, Austin McHenry, Branch Rickey ("8," comes with an addendum signed by McHenry, Gd-Vg). 22) 3/16/21, William Dillhoefer, Branch Rickey . 23) 3/17/21, Henry Vick, Branch Rickey (Gd, with a few tears). 24) 4/13/21, Milton Stock, Sam Breadon. 25) 4/22/21, Jack Smith, Sam Breadon. 26) 4/27/21, Vernon Clemons, Branch Rickey . 27) 6/1/21, Charles Niebergall, Branch Rickey (Gd, with a few tears). 28) 9/3/21, Howard Jones, Sam Breadon. 29) 12/22/21, John Lavan, Branch Rickey . 30) Also included in this collection is a Brooklyn Dodgers contract for Ed Pfeffer, dated 2/8/21, and signed by both Pfeffer and team president Charles Ebbets ("10").
