Circa 1920 George Sisler Single-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $9,400.00
Spectacular George Sisler single-signed ball dating from the height of his illustrious career. This is the finest vintage Sisler single-signed ball we have ever seen. Sisler has signed the ball in blue fountain pen across the sweet spot, while the panel above bears his warm inscription: “To my good friend Walter E. Fritsch – From.” Both the signature and inscription grade a strong “8” and contrast extremely well against the ball’s clean white surface. The ball, which dates from the 1910 to 1925 manufacturing period, remains in remarkable condition given its age. With the exception of a few tiny areas of light discoloration, the ball displays much as it did when first taken out of its original box. All of the manufacturer’s stampings are bright and legible, and the ball is in Excellent to Mint condition overall. Sisler began his fifteen-year Major League career in 1915 and during the eleven-year period 1915-1925 he twice hit over .400 for the season. Today his lifetime average of .340 ranks fourteenth on the all-time list. Single-signed balls dating from the early 1920s or earlier, in any condition, are exceedingly rare, especially those of Hall of Fame players. Autograph collectors have always placed a special premium on items signed during a player’s career. When this ball was signed, Sisler was one of the greatest stars of the game. Babe Ruth had countless occasions to present single-signed balls, and signed literally thousands. Whether it was because Sisler played in St. Louis as opposed to New York, or that he was simply not associated with this then relatively new tradition, very few Sisler signed balls are known dating from his playing days. This single-signed baseball is clearly deserving of special consideration in the universe of Sisler signed items, by any measure representing one of the finest Sisler single-signed balls in existence. Extraordinary in all respects. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $9,400.00
