1927 New York Yankees Near-Complete Signature Collection with Ruth, Gehrig, and Shocker (23 out of 25 players)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00 , Sold For - $7,637.50

Extremely Important Addendum: The print catalog describes the Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig cut signatures in this display as authentic. This is an error. The Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig signatures in this display have been determined to be secretarial signatures by James Spence Authentications. All other signatures have are authentic (with the exception of Giard, which is a facsimile for display for presentation as noted in the catalog description). We apologize for any inconvenience due to this error.

Baseball historians have long considered the 1927 New York Yankees the greatest team of all time. Autograph collectors hold the legendary "Bronx Bombers" in equally high esteem and today a signature example from any member of that fabled club is highly prized but very difficult to assemble. Offered here is an extraordinary complete 1927 New York Yankees autograph collection, in the form of "cuts," featuring signature examples of twenty-three of the twenty-five roster players, including Ruth, Gehrig, and Shocker (a key rarity; Shocker passed away in 1928). Also included within the collection are the signatures of manager Miller Huggins (passed away in 1929), coaches Art Fletcher and Charley O'Leary, and team owner Jacob Ruppert. This is the most comprehensive 1927 New York Yankees signature collection we have ever seen. It is missing only the extremely rare signatures of Walter Beall (who appeared in one game, pitching a single inning) and Joe Giard for completion (a facsimile signature of Giard has been mounted within the display for presentation purposes). Its thoroughness and incredible high quality aside, the manner in which the signatures have been presented also sets this collection apart from all other signature collections devoted to this historic team. All of the signatures are matted within the framework of a large wall display. A photo of the 1927 Yankees is situated in the center of the display, surrounded by the cut signatures. Mounted alongside each signature is a recently produced baseball card picturing the respective player. The signatures featured here are those of Huggins (Mgr.), Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzeri, Dugan, Combs, Meusel, Collins, Morehart, Grabowski, Durst, Gazella, Paschal, Wera, Bengough, Hoyt, Moore, Pennock, Shocker, Ruether, Pipgras, Thomas, Shawkey, Fletcher (coach), O'Leary (coach), and Ruppert (team owner). All of the signatures have been penned in either blue or black ink on unlined sheets or cards (varying in size from 2.25 x .5 inches to 4.25 x 2 inches), with the exception of Thomas (endorsement on the reverse of a 1927 team payroll check), Huggins (portion of a stock certificate), Fletcher (endorsement on the reverse of a team payroll check, year unknown), Ruppert (portion of a contract or other official document), and Pennock (portion of a personal check). All of the signatures are boldly penned, grading between "8" and "10." This is a phenomenal piece in all respects. It is by far the most stunning 1927 New York Yankees signature display we have ever encountered, and it is the result of many years of serious collecting with a determination and vision to create this museum-caliber display. It is the potential to create a display of this magnitude that plays a role in the market for cut signatures of players from the most important teams in the history of the game. Here the work has already been done, and it could not look more impressive. This piece also, naturally, has a very substantial break value, if this was ever desired, though we hope it will always remain intact. Total dimensions: 33 x 41 inches. Please Note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $7,637.50
