Christy Walsh Syndicate 1924 World Series Photo Signed By Ruth, Cobb, McGraw, Johnson, Sisler, Altrock, and Walsh

Starting Bid - $1,500.00 , Sold For - $5,875.00

Large promotional photograph for the Christy Walsh Syndicate, taken at the 1924 World Series, signed in black fountain pen along the base by all seven individuals pictured: Babe Ruth ("4/5"), Walter Johnson ("10"), Ty Cobb ("9/10"), John McGraw ("6"), George Sisler ("6"), Nick Altrock ("10"), and Christy Walsh ("8/9"). The preprinted lettering in the foreground reads, "Over One Million Words in 8 Days Filed by This Great All-Star Staff of The Christy Walsh Syndicate - 1924 World Series - Washington vs. 'Giants.'" The Christy Walsh Syndicate employed many of the top athletes in sports to write syndicated columns for newspapers across the country. Despite the fact that nearly all of the columns were ghost written, the celebrity bylines were extremely successful in attracting readers and the Christy Walsh Syndicate prospered for over two decades. In addition to founding the syndicate, Christy Walsh also served as Ruth's longtime business agent. Walsh annually produced display photographs of his writing syndicate taken at the World Series and distributed them as promotional vehicles for the business. Signed examples, such as this, were often used as special presentation gifts to his top clients (newspaper syndication business associates) for office display. Over the years we have actually seen approximately ten similar display photographs signed by the legends of the Christy Walsh Syndicate featuring them at the World Series (with years ranging from the early 1920s through the early 1930s), always posed in front of the dugout. The photograph (16.5 x 13.5 inches) displays a small corner chip in the lower right, as well as a few very minor creases, and a few tack holes (almost all in the corners) relating to its former display. Although technically in Very Good condition, nearly all of the flaws are relegated to the border areas and the central image presents as Excellent. This is an extraordinary signed display photograph of seven of the greatest legends of the game at the 1924 World Series. Framed to total dimensions of 18.5 x 15.5 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000+. SOLD FOR $5,875.00
