1926 "Golden Jubilee National League" Presentation Baseballs, One Signed by Babe Ruth
Starting Bid - $1,500.00 , Sold For - $7,050.00
Presented is an exceptional Babe Ruth single-signed National League baseball, part of a 1926 National League "Golden Jubilee" set of two presentation baseballs. On February 2, 1926 the National League celebrated its 50th anniversary by holding a festive banquet at the Hotel Astor in New York. To commemorate the occasion, attendees at the dinner received a special boxed set of two official National League baseballs. The gold-colored box is lettered “Golden Jubilee – National League – Feb. 2, 1926” on the lid and opens to reveal two baseballs mounted within a velvet-lined holder. One of the baseballs in each set is decorated with small sepia portraits of each of the past eight presidents of the league. The second ball in this set, which was issued blank and was to be used for the collection of autographs if desired, has been signed by Babe Ruth. Ruth’s signature has been scripted in black fountain pen across the sweet spot and grades “6/7.” These “Golden Jubilee” boxed sets have always been a favorite among collectors due to their extraordinary display value. The fact that Babe Ruth has signed the second ball (most known examples are multisigned by a given attendee's affiliated team) further distinguishes the piece and makes it one of the most desirable "Golden Jubilee" sets and interesting Babe Ruth signed balls we have seen. The Ruth-signed ball is lightly soiled and in Excellent condition overall. The decorated ball also has a little light soiling (the balls were probably openly displayed for many years) and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. The "Golden Jubilee" box itself is in far better condition than normally seen. The box (8.25 x 4.25 x 3 inches) displays moderate handling wear, mainly along the edges, and is in Very Good to Excellent condition. Total: 3 pieces (box and two balls). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $7,050.00
