1928 Babe Ruth Signed Baseball
Starting Bid - $500.00 , Sold For - $4,406.25
This official National League/Mid Atlantic League ball, which has been signed by six players, is highlighted by a remarkably bold Babe Ruth signature. Ruth has beautifully inscribed the ball in blue fountain pen (grading "9/10") on a side panel (extending into a portion of the sweet spot), "To Dr. H. W. Labis - From Babe Ruth". The remaining blue fountain-pen signatures (grading between "7" and "9") on the ball are those of Doc Woods (Yankees trainer, same panel as Ruth's inscription), Art Fletcher (Yankees coach), Archie Campbell (Yankees pitchers), Pat Collins (Yankees catcher), and Charley Gelbert (Cardinals shortstop in the early 1930s). Although this is an official National League ball (dating from the 1926-1934 manufacturing period) it is a special variety produced by Spalding specifically for the Middle Atlantic League and is so stamped on a side panel (Elmer M. Daily, President). 1928 was the only year in which Ruth, Collins, Campbell, Fletcher, and Woods were together on the Yankees. Charley Gelbert began his Major League career in 1929. Although the exact date this ball was signed will probably never be pinpointed, it seems quite likely that it dates from either 1928 or 1929. The Ruth signature displays beautifully. The ball is moderately soiled and in Very Good to Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $4,406.25
