George Burke Signed Hall of Fame Photograph Collection (23) in Framed Display

Starting Bid - $800.00 , Sold For - $1,997.50

This spectacular framed wall display is comprised of twenty-three original George Burke photographs, each individually signed on the front by the respective player: Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Stan Musial, Charlie Gehringer, Luke Appling, Rick Ferrell, Billy Herman, Lou Boudreau, Warren Spahn, Johnny Mize, Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, Enos Slaughter, Joe Sewell, Bill Dickey, Lefty Gomez, Bill Terry, Carl Hubbell, Ralph Kiner, Bob Feller, George Kell, Bobby Doerr, and Bob Lemon. Each of the signatures has been penned in either blue or black fine-point marker pen and each is signed flawlessly, grading "10." The photos measure approximately 4 x 6 inches and all are in apparent Near Mint condition. If this particular display piece looks familiar it's because a nearly identical George Burke signed photo display, featuring most of the very same players (some in different poses) was offered in the famous 1999 Barry Halper auction. Interestingly, this piece was purchased by our consignor at the same time and from the same gentleman who sold Halper his piece many years ago. Our consignor recalled that at that the time of its purchase a total of three such display pieces had been created by the seller, each similarly matted and framed with an uncompromising attention to quality and detail. The triple-matting and framing is exceptional, as intended, and turns these extremely high quality signed original photos into an extraordinary display. George Burke, who resided in Chicago, is one of the most famous baseball photographers of the twentieth century. Burke was a frequent figure at both Comiskey Park and Wrigley field from 1929 through 1951 and in that span he photographed nearly every player in either league at one time or another. While Burke photos are widely collected, signed examples, especially those of Hall of Fame players, are especially highly prized by collectors. There is no question that the cost of the high-quality framing and matting alone for this piece would approach $1,000. This is an extraordinary signed photo display, featuring the works of one of baseball's most gifted photographers, and one that would be a worthy centerpiece of any office, den, or boardroom. Total dimensions: 36 x 47 inches. Please Note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $1,997.50
