Circa 1935 San Francisco Seals Team-Signed PCL Baseball with Ty Cobb, Tony Lazzeri, and Lefty Gomez

Starting Bid - $300.00 , Sold For - $1,762.50

Offered here is an official American League ball (president’s name on the side of the ball no longer legible) signed in black fountain pen by the 1935 San Franscico Seals of the Pacific Coast League, plus several additional Major League stars. The twenty-five signatures include Ty Cobb (“7/8”), Joe DiMaggio (“6”, then with the Seals), Tony Lazzeri (“5/6”), Lefty O’Doul (“6/7”), and Lefty Gomez (twice, once in vintage black fountain pen and again, possibly more recently, in blue ink, both grading “8”). Of the remaining twenty signatures on the ball, included are the following players who at one time or another played in the Major Leagues (years played in the Majors noted in parentheses): Duster Mails (1915-16, 1920-22, 1925-26), Hal Rhyne (1926-33), Floyd Newkirk (1934), Joe Becker (1936-37), Larry Woodall (1920-29), Sam Gibson (1926-32), Roy Joiner (1934-35, 1940), Joe Marty (1937-41), Art Garibaldi (1936, sweet spot), and Les Powers (1938-39). Other signatures include Frank Gira, Ted Norbert, James Dinsmore, Ed Stutz, Steve Barath, Vince Monzo (sweet spot), and Neal Cifford. The signatures range in grade from “5” to “9,” averaging “7/8.” Although the ball dates from the 1926-1933 manufacturing period, based upon the signatures it appears that this is a 1935 San Francisco Seals team-signed ball that has also been signed by Cobb, Lazzeri, and Gomez. The addition of those three signatures is not surprising as both Lazzeri and Gomez were from the Bay area, and Cobb had a residence in California at the time. If our interpretation is correct, this is a 1935 San Francisco Seals team ball dating from DiMaggio’s final season with the club that was also signed by a few additional Bay area stars. This is a very interesting and unique signed ball of special note as it links Ty Cobb and Joe DiMaggio at the very beginning of DiMaggio's legendary career. The ball is lightly soiled and in Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,762.50
