1939 Hall of Fame Induction Signature Display with Ruth, Young, Wagner, and Johnson

Starting Bid - $2,500.00 , Sold For - $11,750.00

One of the most famous baseball photographs of all time is that picturing the first ten living members of the Hall of Fame posing together on the dais at the dedication of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. (Ty Cobb was late to the ceremony and was therefore not included in the photo.) This spectacular wall display features a large 14 x 11-inch print of that image, matted together with black-and-white Hall of Fame plaque postcards and signature examples of each player pictured: Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Connie Mack, Honus Wagner, Cy Young, Nap Lajoie, Grover Alexander, George Sisler, Tris Speaker, and Eddie Collins. All of the signature examples are penned on either a "cut" or an unlined index card, with the exception of Ruth and Young. Ruth's black fountain pen signature ("10") appears on a full personal check, dated March 11, 1946, and made out to "Saks Fifth Avenue" in the amount of $15.10. Young's blue fountain pen signature ("10") appears on the front of an early Hall of Fame postcard picturing an illustration of the Baseball Hall of Fame. All of the remaining signatures have been penned in either blue or black fountain pen and grade "9/10" with the exception of Lajoie and Speaker ("8"). The value and desirability of the signatures aside, this piece, which measures 41 x 33 inches, is one of the most visually impressive and well conceived signature displays we have ever seen. In addition to the signatures, photo, and Hall of Fame plaque postcards, the display also includes a copy of the cover to the 1939 Hall of Fame induction program and a custom-made descriptive sheet in the center identifying the ceremony and the players. Our consignor collected with the intention of having each of his items displayed on the walls of his home museum. This particular piece, along with his other four substantial framed signature displays (which are also in this auction) are the result of his great efforts and the highlights of his vast collection. This is a simply extraordinary museum-caliber framed signature display. The Ruth check has normal bank cancellation stamps and perforations, and is otherwise in Excellent condition. The Cy Young signed postcard displays a few creases and is in Very Good condition. The remaining cuts and index cards are all in Near Mint condition. We can't imagine anyone disassembling this magnificent framed display, but the individual pieces do, naturally, have a very substantial break value. Please Note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++. SOLD FOR $11,750.00
